In a perfect world every dog would have a home, and every home would have a dog!
The Alaskan Klee Kai is a energetic little breed. They are loving, curious, active, agile and are great escape artists. I actually had a 12 week old AKK slide under my couch to get a toy, 3 inches at best. They are great climbers and will find the weak spot in your yard to escape so you need to plan accordingly. They are very standoffish to strangers so socialization is a must and will be required throughout their lives. They are born hunters and will chase birds and cats unless raised with them.
Appearance
There are 3 AKK sizes
Toy 13 inches or less
Miniature 13-15 inches
Standard 15-17 inches
All coat colors are acceptable provided that the facial mask is distinct and clearly visible, all markings are symmetrical, and there is a contrasting lighter color on the dog's throat, chest, breeches, feet, legs and underside. Any of the following markings are very desirable but it is not necessary that all be present: Light spots over the eyes; a light blaze centered in the middle of the skull and stop; a dark strip down the center of the muzzle which may be evenly divided by a narrow light-colored strip; dark coloration under the eyes; and dark coloration at the tip of the tail. The outer coat is normally long, straight and soft and the undercoat is dense and soft. Their most common eye color is brown. Eyes also may be double blue, parti (brown and blue colors mixed), or bi-eyed (one blue and one brown eye). Currently breeder priorities remain health and temperament.
Children and the Alaskan Klee Kai
I have 3 very young children and my Klee Kai have done very well with them. My children have been taught the proper treatment of animals but I still only allow them to be together when supervised. Since my children and dogs are always with me that happens to be most of the time. Alasksan Klee Kai have been known to nip if mistreated by children so it is up to the parents for the proper training- the children and the dogs.
Grooming
The Alaskan Klee Kai is a northern breed, so yes they shed. They shed all year round and blow their undercoat twice a year. When coat blowing season is upon you it is not uncommon to find small tufts of hair blowing across your wood floor like tumbleweed. In between coat blowing you will not be shocked to find an occasional hair floating around in your cup of coffee. They are excellent self groomers so baths are seldom needed. You will need to brush your dog on a regular basis, more so during the shedding season. You quickly learn little tricks like purchasing the "furminator", an excellent brush for coat blowing season and keeping a lint brush in your car for those times you take a little piece of your doggy to work with you.
Living Arrangement's
These small dogs require daily
exercise. They can live in an apartment setting if they are getting the exercise they need. They do not like to be alone, a person who spends 12 hours a day working outside the home may not be the best owner for a Klee Kai. A fenced yard is preferred but as stated above it must be secure. Overall a Klee Kai is looking for a firm owner who takes the time to love, train, and exercise them properly.
